WPCSS  Albert Goldsmith Local History Day Award

In keeping with its mission statement of supporting efforts to focus on local history, the Western Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies established the Albert Goldsmith Local History Day Award for the outstanding exhibit with a focus on local or family history. This will be an annual award at the Western Pennsylvania National History Day Competition held at the Senator John Heinz History Center each Spring.   Albert Goldsmith was a longtime member of WPCSS and until a few years ago was a regular at all functions of the council. Upon his death, Mr. Goldsmith left a bequest to the Council which will perpetually fund this award.

The basic Award is a certificate accompanied by a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.  The winner would be presented with the certificate at the Awards Ceremony on History Day at the Heinz History Center.  Over the past year (2012), a change in the way bods are sold has occurred. Bonds may only be ourchased on line and sent to any person who has a Bond account with the U.S.Treasury Department or held in the account of the purchaser.  This has caused some problems in procuring the bonds for our winners.  In lieu of the Bond, WPCSS will issue to each of the awardees, a check for $50, the price of a $100 bond,  in order that they may register with the Treasury Department and purchase the bond.
